New Nursing Program to Hit the Borderland – Not Your Average Nursing Program

May 31, 2019

El Paso, Texas – May 14, 2019 – Western Technical College (Western Tech) a 2017 Innovation in Education award winner has been approved by the Texas Board of Nursing and ACCSC to offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

The program will offer an exciting and accessible opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in just under 3 years with the flexibility to integrate education with personal and professional responsibilities. Taught by prestigious faculty, students will have the opportunity to learn on the latest technology on high fidelity mannequins, conduct clinical rotations in local hospitals, and prepare to test for the NCLEX exam.

The U.S. Department of Labor recently identified registered nursing as the fastest growing occupation through 2012, yet less than 50 percent of working nurse professionals have obtained their bachelor’s degree. Western Tech now celebrates a nursing program that will contribute to the shortage of nurses and offer an opportunity for those that started on this path, an avenue to finish.

“This is huge for the city of El Paso, commented Margie Aguilar, Campus President at the Diana Campus. We understand the shortage of nurses and some of the obstacle’s students face in completing a degree in this field. We are excited to be able to offer options to those wanting to pursue a career as a nurse,” Margie explained.

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) stated, “Congratulations to Western Tech for expanding educational opportunities for El Pasoans while also addressing our demand for skilled health care workers. Healthcare is a critical component of our local economy and Western Tech is ensuring we have the trained workforce we need to grow it.”

Brad Kuykendall, CEO stated, “Western Tech is prepared to advance and contribute to a profession that is experiencing incredible growth and has great earning potential.”

Western Tech will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Wednesday, May 29th at 10am at 9451 Diana Drive to showcase the classrooms and the equipment students will be learning on. Members of the El Paso Chamber and city representatives have all been invited.
