Student Portion Allocation Methodology for CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants
Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Western Technical College (Western Tech) received relief funds to distribute as emergency financial aid grants to eligible students of our institution. Under the law, these grant funds may only be used by eligible students for expenses they have incurred as a result of the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.
In determining eligibility for the Emergency Financial Aid Grant, Western Tech has decided to split the total into three different pools of funds; each approximately one-third of the total student portion of CARES funds received.
Western Tech will distribute the first pool of funds as a $400 emergency grant to all eligible students who were active as of March 31, 2020 and have remained eligible from that date.
The second grant disbursement will be based on the calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must also have submitted a 2020-2021 FAFSA to qualify. EFC takes into account various factors such as household income, household dependents, cost of living, cost of attendance, and other financial factors. Western Tech has set five tiers of eligibility with their associated amounts which are as follows:
- EFC Range: 0-1200 Amount Eligible to Receive: $550
- EFC Range: 1201-2200 Amount Eligible to Receive: $425
- EFC Range: 2201-3200 Amount Eligible to Receive: $325
- EFC Range: 3201-4200 Amount Eligible to Receive: $225
- EFC Range: 4201-5576 Amount Eligible to Receive: $130
Additional eligibility requirements include, but are not limited to, having an approved FAFSA on file with the College for the 2019-2020 award year as well as the 2020-2021 award year. You will also need a signed and approved CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants Student Certification Form on file with the College and ensure that your contact information and address are updated on the Campus Student Portal.
