PARENTS & FAMILIES
A special message to parents and family members: Welcome! Over the years, we’ve learned that parent and family support plays a major role in the success of our students. You’re in a unique position to help your son/daughter make the transition from youth to adulthood. Please read through the following recommendations so that your son/daughter is prepared for success, independence and a bright future.
APPLYING
To see if your son/daughter meets the eligibility requirements to attend Western Technical College, please visit our Admissions Process page. It will walk you through every step of enrollment.
STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES
Whether your son/daughter is interested in enrolling or is packing at this very moment, the top priority is to have all necessary paperwork for Financial Aid turned in on time. We have a limited number of seats available in our training programs. Paperwork must be turned in on time to avoid delays in your student’s career. To set up an appointment with a Financial Aid team member, please call 1-800-225-5984. Did you know? In addition to Financial Aid, Western Technical College has many scholarships available to offset tuition costs. Visit our scholarships page to learn more.
HOUSING
If your student will be living away from home, there are several apartments nearby our campuses. Go here to start your search. If you need moving assistance, please contact Dependable Relo. For additional details, please reach out to your Admission’s Representative.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
Coaching is available without an additional fee for students who need extra help in certain areas of the curriculum. Both one-on-one sessions and group-style reviews are available. Review classes are held prior to certification and licensure exams. Additional lab time is available to students who want to practice hands-on technical applications. To schedule a time for extra coaching, contact the Program Director or instructor.
HOMESICKNESS
This may be the first time your student is away from home and living with new roommates. It may take a month or two for your son/daughter to adjust. Don’t be surprised if he/she calls and is homesick. This is the toughest part of being a parent, but try to show a little “tough love.” Talk to your son/daughter about the importance of staying in school and getting an education. It will all be worth it.
INSURANCE
We encourage you to check into insurance for your son/daughter. Usually, coverage will be extended while dependents are still full-time students. If your son/daughter has any medical conditions, please bring a letter from their doctor. Also, ask your local physician for a referral to a doctor in El Paso.
PART-TIME JOBS
Many students are able to defray a part of their expenses by working while going to school. Western Technical College does help students in locating part-time jobs on a space-available basis, but our main objective is to assist students with full-time employment after graduation.
REGISTRATION
You will receive a phone call from your Admission Representative scheduling your son/daughter for registration. If you are driving, we recommend having your car in for a tune-up ahead of time, just to be on the safe side. If your son/daughter does not have a car, consider bringing a bike with a lock. It can be used for quick trips to the store and bank. If you have questions, we’re here for you and your family. Please call your Admissions Representative for guidance or to set up an appointment.
